Why I Choose Low-Tox and No-Tox Cleaning Products

Why I Choose Low-Tox and No-Tox Cleaning Products

One of the questions I get asked often is what products I use when I clean.

The truth is, whenever possible, I choose low-tox or no-tox products — not because I am trying to be trendy, but because it genuinely feels like the right fit for both my business and the homes I care for.

As a cleaner, I work with products every single day. What I breathe in matters. What gets on my skin matters. Even the difference in how my hands and eyes feel after a day of cleaning is noticeable when I am using gentler products instead of harsher traditional ones.

Over time, I have come to really value using products that feel safer and more comfortable for me to work with day in and day out, while still doing a beautiful job in my clients’ homes.

Many people ask me what I use, and the answer is a mix. I use some Melaleuca products, some Young Living products, and I also make a few of my own. Most recently, I have been especially excited to work with a local female-owned company called Mint. Their products smell amazing, and I’m genuinely thrilled to be using them.

For me, it is about finding that balance between effectiveness and intention.

Living and working in such a beautiful community makes me even more aware of the choices I make. I care about the homes I clean, the people who live in them, the kids and pets moving through them, and the environment we all share. Choosing low-tox or no-tox options whenever I can just feels like a good, thoughtful fit for the kind of business I want to build.

That said, I also believe cleaning is personal.

There are times when a stronger, more traditional product is the right tool for the job — especially for something extra grimy, a very heavy deep clean, or when a client simply prefers it. Some people love that classic bleach-clean smell. Some love Pine-Sol. And if that is what makes a client’s home feel clean and comfortable to them, I am always happy to work with that too.

My approach has never been about judgment. It is about options.

I want my clients to know that I am happy to offer a lower-tox approach by default, while still being flexible enough to meet their needs and preferences. For me, that feels like the best of both worlds: thoughtful, effective cleaning with room for personal choice.

At the end of the day, I want the homes I clean to feel fresh, calm, healthy, and cared for.

And I want the way I work to reflect the kind of business I believe in — one that supports families, respects personal preferences, values local partnerships, and makes intentional choices wherever possible.

That is a big part of what Serenity & Sage is all about.
